All Natural Body ScrubsSummer is finally here! So this means that we will be exposing parts of our bodies that have been hidden under sweaters and track pants for the last few months and they may not be looking their summery best right now. So we need to improve what maybe greasy, ashy, or scaly “lizard” skin with a great body scrub. A little work now will go a long long way. Body scrubs in the shops can be expensive so here are a few ideas to create your own body scrubs at a fraction of store prices. It is important that you use the best quality ingredients you can find when you create your own body care products.

Salt Scrubs:

Salt especially coarse sea salt is a great base for a body scrub to remove all dry skin. You basically need to add is a carrier liquid (like oil, glycerin or honey), and a scent. You can of course try your own ideas as to the different ingredients that work best for you and your dry skin.

Citrus Morning Scrub:

► 1 cup sea salt

► 1 cup olive oil

► 2 drops grapefruit essential oil

► 1 tbsp lemon zest

Combine all the above ingredients together and place into a sealed jar. Use as you would any other body scrub by gently applying to your wet skin and massage into your skin in gentle, circular motions in order to exfoliate the dry skin. Rinse thoroughly, pat dry, and moisturize if necessary.

Basic Salt and Honey Scrub:

► ½ cup of sea salt

► ½ cup of honey

You can add other ingredients if you wish such as rosemary lavender, basil, or mint. Combine the ingredients as before. Use as you would any other body scrub by gently applying to your wet skin and massage into your skin in gentle, circular motions in order to exfoliate the dry skin. Rinse thoroughly, pat dry, and moisturize if necessary.

Mediterranean Olive Oil Scrub:

► ½ cup of sea salt

► ¼ cup of olive oil

► ½ cup of brown sugar (like muscovado or demerara)

► A couple of drops of orange essential oil

Combine all the above ingredients together. Use as you would any other body scrub by gently applying to your wet skin and massage into your skin in gentle, circular motions in order to exfoliate the skin. Rinse thoroughly, pat dry. You shouldn’t need to moisturize afterwards, since the olive oil will leave your skin dewy-soft.

Sugar Scrubs:

You can use either white or brown sugar. Muscovado sugar is softer than turbinado or demerara and will be gentler on your skin, but won’t exfoliate quite as well.

Coconut, Brown Sugar, and Vanilla Scrub

► ½ cup brown (or white) sugar

► ½ cup coconut oil

► ½ teaspoon vanilla extract

Combine all the above ingredients together. Use as you would any other body scrub by gently applying to your wet skin and massage into your skin in gentle, circular motions in order to exfoliate the skin. Rinse thoroughly, pat dry, and moisturize if necessary.

Rose Petal Scrub:

► 1 ½ cups of brown (turbinado) sugar

► 1 tablespoon of sweet almond or jojoba oil

► 1 cup of coconut oil

► Petals from one rose (pink or red)

► 1 clean mason jar with a lid

You need to prepare this a few days in advance. Pour the coconut oil into the jar, and follow it with a handful of rose petals. Then add the raw sugar, and top with the almond or jojoba oil. When you’re ready to use it, mash it all together with a large spoon, slather it all over your body, massage into your skin, and then rinse well.

The above scrubs are easy and fun to make and will cost a fraction of the cost of store bought body scrubs. They are certain to cleanse and soften skin that winter may have abused, leaving you soft and radiant for whatever adventures you’ll have this summer.
